There are three different ways to bring new clients into the MTD-IT module within Capium. The right method depends on your client's current situation — whether they already qualify for MTD-IT today, are likely to qualify in future, or are being set up for digital record keeping now. This guide walks through each option.

Option 1: Add the Client Directly in the MTD-IT Module

This is the most straightforward method and is the recommended approach for any client who already qualifies for MTD-IT today.

To add a client this way:

1.    Navigate to: MTD IT > Manage > Add Client. Alternatively click on this link to be redirected. 

2.    Fill in the client's details and create the record.

3.    The client will appear in the Manage section in a Not Authorised state.

4.    Click on the client and complete their HMRC authorisation.

5.    Proceed to create a tax year and continue.

Use this option for all clients who qualify for MTD-IT as of today.

Option 2 (a): Add the Client via the Self-Assessment Module

This option is best suited for clients who do not currently meet the MTD-IT income threshold, but are expected to qualify in the near future as the threshold decreases.

As a reminder, the current and upcoming MTD-IT income thresholds are:

•    £50,000 and above — currently in scope

•    £30,000 and above — entering scope from 2027-28

•    £20,000 and above — entering scope from 2028-29


To add a client this way:

6.    Navigate to: Self Assessment > SA100> Add Client. Alternatively click on this link to be redirected. 

7.    Make sure to select them as an Individual.

8.    The client will be visible in Self-Assessment for their current tax year submission.

9.    They will also appear in the Capium 365 module.


Option 2 (b): Add the Client via the Self-Assessment Module
When the time comes to bring them into MTD-IT, you can bring them in using Imp go to the Capium 365 module locate the client, click Edit, navigate to Modules, and enable their MTD-IT access.

This switches them from the traditional SA100 flow to the new MTD-IT flow.

Use this option for clients who are not yet in scope but will qualify as the income thresholds drop. They can continue their Self-Assessment submissions in the meantime.



Option 3: Add the Client via the Capium 365 Module

This option is for clients you want to set up for digital record keeping from today onwards, even if they are not yet in the MTD-IT regime.

To add a client this way:

11.     Navigate to: Capium 365 > Manage > Add Client. Alternatively click on this link to be redirected. 

12.    By default, the client will be created and will be visible in both Capium 365 and the Self-Assessment module.

13.    MTD-IT access is not enabled by default. When ready, go into the client record, click Edit, navigate to Modules, and enable MTD-IT.

14.    Once enabled, the client will transition from the SA100 flow to the MTD-IT flow.

Use this option when a client needs digital record keeping set up now, ahead of their MTD-IT entry date.
