MTD Authorisation Error: “The Client or Agent is Not Authorised”
If you see the error message:
“The client or agent is not authorised”
this means that HMRC has not successfully authorised the connection between your account and Capium.
Why This Happens
This error occurs when HMRC does not return the required authorisation data via their API based on the details provided. As a result, the system cannot verify that you (or your client) have permission to access MTD services.
Common Causes
- MTD authorisation has not been completed or has expired
- Incorrect Government Gateway credentials were used
- The client has not authorised the agent for MTD
- MTD for VAT/ITSA is not fully activated with HMRC
- There may be delays or issues within HMRC’s systems
How to Resolve It
You will need to contact HMRC directly, as this issue cannot be resolved within Capium.
? Contact the HMRC MTD IT Support Team
They can:
- Confirm whether MTD is fully set up and active
- Check if the correct authorisation has been granted
- Identify why the API is not returning the required data
Important Note
Capium relies on HMRC’s API for authorisation. If HMRC does not provide the necessary data, we are unable to override or resolve this error from our side.
