Companies House Identity Verification (IDV) – What You Need to Know
From 18 November 2025, Companies House will introduce mandatory identity verification (IDV) checks for company directors, people with significant control (PSCs), and others. This new process is part of the government’s wider efforts to improve transparency and prevent fraud.
This guide explains who needs to be verified, how verification works, options available, and key considerations for firms and clients.
Who Needs to Be Verified?
IDV will apply to the following individuals:
Directors of limited companies
Members of limited liability partnerships (LLPs)
People with Significant Control (PSCs)
From spring 2026, those who deliver accounts to Companies House
Verification will be required:
At incorporation for new companies
At the next confirmation statement for existing directors, members, and PSCs
How Identity Verification (IDV) Works
IDV can be completed either:
Through a government service (via GOV.UK), or
By an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP) — such as an accountancy firm registered to provide IDV services.
This article focuses on the ACSP route, though clients may choose to use the government services directly.
Government IDV Options
1. GOV.UK One Login ID Check App
Uses a smartphone to scan biometric data from a valid identity document (e.g. passport).
Takes a live photo or video to match against the ID.
2. GOV.UK One Login Web Service
Involves answering detailed security questions (e.g. bank or mortgage details).
Requires submission of ID document information.
3. GOV.UK One Login Face-to-Face Service
Appointment-based service at participating Post Offices.
Documents are checked in person and linked to the individual’s digital record.
Requires online booking and a valid email address.
ACSP IDV Options
An Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP) can offer ID verification for clients using one of two methods:
Option 1: IDVT (Identity Verification Technology)
Uses secure technology to read cryptographic (biometric) data from ID documents (e.g. passports).
Compares that data to photos or videos of the person.
Requires the ACSP to ensure the IDVT provider meets all Companies House standards.
Option 2: Manual Verification
Involves trained staff reviewing ID documents and comparing them with the individual, either face-to-face or via video call.
Staff must have training that meets Home Office best practice standards, including how to detect tampering or document damage.
Required Information & Documents
To complete IDV, you’ll need:
Full name, date of birth, and address history
A personal email address (unique to the individual)
Valid ID documents (e.g. passport, driving licence, or other accepted forms)
If using Option 2 (manual), at least two documents are required — such as a passport and a bank statement.
The full list of acceptable documents will be set out in Companies House guidance.
Additional checks may be required if:
The person’s address history is less than 12 months
The person has changed their name
In such cases, supporting documents (e.g. utility bills, council tax, or bank statements) may be requested.
After Verification
Once you have verified the person’s ID:
Submit their details via your ACSP online account, including:
Document reference number(s)
Expiry date(s)
Country of issue
Confirm the following declaration:
You are satisfied the person is who they claim to be
You have completed checks that meet the Companies House verification standard
You do not submit copies of ID documents, but you must:
Retain copies for seven years from the verification date.
Keep records of any failed verification attempts.
Once completed, Companies House will send the individual a unique 11-character personal code by email.
This code links their verified identity to any roles they hold (director, PSC, LLP member, etc.), and can be reused for multiple appointments.
